Storyboard Text

  • I was just talking to Steven White!
  • YOUR NOT ALOUD TO TALK TO ANYONE FREAK!
  • Into the cabinet Ada.
  • No! Please! I didn't teach Jamie to steal! I Promise!
  • Why would you go somewhere without telling me or leaving a note!
  • Susan's going to smack me like Mam.
  • In this scene Mam (Ada's mom) yells at Ada for talking to Steven White from the window. Ada's mom clearly abuses her. She hits her often and Ada is scared of her mom. She gets in trouble for little things like talking to Steven. Ada's mom is ashamed of Ada's clubfoot and so she keeps Ada locked up. Ada's never really experienced the outside world. This a clear sign that Ada's abused. Her mom is ashamed of Ada's foot so she makes Ada stay inside. She can't go to school and she's kept in one room with a window. To Ada this is normal but it doesn't make it any less scary or painful.
  • Mam forces Ada into a tiny little cabinet with cockroaches. She begs her mom not to make her but her mom just looks down her nose at her. Ada is getting big for the cabinet and she doesn't want to go in. She's been forced in before. This has happened before because while narrating she says she had become bigger since the last time she was in it. Mam doesn't care because when she pulls Ada out in the morning, Ada couldn't move. Clearly this isn't good for a child and today would be considered child abuse and even then it probably would be frowned upon.
  • Susan went out one day and came home to find Ada gone. Turns out she was helping someone who fell off their horse but Susan was worried. When Ada comes home Susan yells at her because she was scared for Ada's safety. When Susan comes toward her Ada ducks. She thinks Susan's going to hit her like Mam even though she has no intention to. Ada is scared someone's going to hit her for every mistake and it shows just how much her mom hit her. It's obvious that she thinks she's going to get in trouble for small mistakes because with her mom she did. It shows in day to day life how much living with Mam affects her. The social issue abuse still shows even after Ada is away from it.
