"I have never experienced a silence like thisA hundred peopleWaiting for me to speak"
Natali Sarraf
A NOVEL BY ELIZABETH ACEVEDO
THE POET X
EXPOSITION
"Harlem is opening its eyes to SeptemberI scope out this block that I've always called home."
Nearing the end of the book, everything is settling down. While X is still in trouble, It is now a lesser stream of guilt emitted from her mother and more freedom for her, like getting her phone back and being allowed to go to a poetry bash with her best friend, Caridad, and her brother, Twin. Little did X know, but they had signed her up to read some of her poetry at the bash and she did amazing. This confirmation of X's talent and boost in her confidence was a required yet still monumental step towards the book's finish therefore a scene of falling action.
RESOLUTION
"There will be no more backward steps, And so I smile at them bothand step forward."
"Hope is a thing with wingsAlthough I doubt it,hope flies quick intomy body's corners."-X
RISING ACTION
In the very first poem of the story, Xiomara is describing her home and community from her seat on the porch. She introduces both her mother and father, her writing displaying her point of view concerning them. She speaks about the people who watch her and their comments concerning the way she looks and her involvement with the Church. Personal identity and image, both physically and spiritually, play a big role throughout this book and this poetic scene reveals the beginning of these ideas.
CLIMAX
"Only sharply torn.Something broken."
In the final scene, we see all of X's family and friends gather together to celebrate Xiomara's victory at the poetry bash. They have a party filled with a mix of tradition and progress. It showed her conservative parents opening up and accepting something other than their own beliefs. This resolution is a happy one and neatly wraps up the book in a way that is satisfying not only to the reader but to the characters. The hardships the characters had faced made this happy ending a welcome surprise.
Aman, Xiomara's friend/crush, has been hanging out with her for a while. They listen to music together and text. He has become X's forbidden haven. Throughout the story you see how Aman makes X happy and encourages her to go after what she wants. In this scene, they had just skipped their last class and went to the park. There, X has her first kiss and this scene leads X into choppy waters concerning what she wants from herself and life. This moment leads directly to the climax of the story, therefore is the rising action.
Smoke Park
"I have one moment to make my decision. So I press my lips to his."
In this scene, X's mother just witnessed her daughter kissing "some boy" (Aman) and when Mami comes homes she is so enraged. A monumental thing for Mami is religious devotion, which includes chastity. Mami forces Xiomara to kneel on the floor, covered with rice grains, in front of their altar to the Virgin Mary and repent. This is the climax because it is the most intense scene, filled with pain, vigor, and all the chaos that follows is because of what happened here.
