As a peace officer, one of my main responsibilities each day is to patrol the city. Let's go!
Yes! You must be Andre! Are you ready for our ride-along?
So Officer Jones, how did you become a police officer?
Great question, Andre! After graduating from high school, I got a bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice from UT Tyler! Then, I completed six months of police academy before beginning work as an officer a year ago.
While I patrol, I watch for any violations of traffic laws. The car ahead of us is speeding, so I will now perform a traffic stop, which is another daily responsibility.
Officer Jones, do you have any responsibilities as a police officer that put you at risk of harm?
Yes. When I am patrolling, I am sometimes dispatched to respond to crime scenes around the city, which can be dangerous depending on the circumstances.
Thirty minutes later ...
I have just gotten a call from a dispatcher to let me know that I need to respond to a robbery in progress. This could be dangerous because the suspect is armed, but multiple officers will be dispatched in order to reduce the risk of harm for ourselves and citizens.
Now that we have arrested the suspect, I will take the time to carefully document the arrest in a report, which is another daily duty of mine.
Thank you for taking me on the ride-along, Officer Jones! It was great to see the day in the life of a police officer!
