So, imagine the open sea as a plane, or a flat surface. On Google Maps, this would just be the world.
Mkay.

When Google Maps is telling you to go in a direction, it's telling you to move in a line, or a one-dimensional length across a plane.
So when Google Maps tells you to move in a direction, it's telling you to follow a line across a plane to try to help you reach your destination, which is another point somewhere in the plane.
What does that have to do with anything?
