- When Darry, Johnny and Ponyboy get together to watch a movie they spot two Socs girls. Darry attempted to grab their attention and appear friendly but the girls wouldn't let him past. Ponyboy later has a nice conversation with the girls because of his soft traits.
- 'Sure, we're young and innocent.'
- 'You are too sweet to scare anyone.'
- After a long night out in the lot sleeping, Ponyboy discovers the time and is horrified to go back to his house. He peeks through the window and gulps ready to be yelled at. Darry is very frustrated and eventually hits Ponyboy so hard he goes spiralling into the door.
- 'I didn't mean to.'
- 'Where the heck have you been? Do you know what time it is?'
- In an effort to escape his family, Ponyboy returns to Johnny in the lot and explains what happened and asked him if he wanted to join him on a walk around the park. Unfortunately, the Socs turn up and in revenge, for talking to their girls they try to drown Ponyboy and stab Johnny. Giving the situation Johnny gets his switchblade and stabs Bob, killing him and putting the duo in a hard position.
- 'I...I killed him.'
- 'We've gotta get outa here Johnny. We have to get money, a gun and a plan.
- Following Ponyboy and Johnny's treacherous get away to the country, they are forced to lie low in an old church for a week and live off an abundance of cancer sticks and baloney. When they decided to head back a fire erupted from the church so they head inside to save the trapped children.
- 'We started it, we started this mess.'
- 'I told the children not to go in there.'
- In the aftermath of Ponyboy and Johnny's remarkable act of bravery, Ponyboy makes it out almost unscarred where on the other hand Johnny suffers an awful lot of burns and a broken back leaving him in the hospital until he passed away as a hero.
- 'Stay gold Ponyboy.'
- 'Johnny's not dead, Johnny's not dead.'
- Since Johnny and Ponyboy did commit a crime, Ponyboy went to the supreme court with the assistance of his two brothers where he unexpectedly was given a lot less talking of his own. Despite this Darry, Sodapop and Ponyboy were allowed to stay together and return to school and work.
- 'Are you being taken care of at home?'
- 'Darry and Sodapop are great brothers and take good care of me.'
