- Daniel (Day) Wing
- Struggles: As a wanted criminal and the most notorious fugitive in the republic, he is constantly evading authorities and struggling to stay alive in an oppressive society. Day also struggles with guilt and responsibilities, especially about his family and the consequences of his actions as a rebel against the republic
- Motivations: Day's primary motivation is the safety of his family, especially his younger brother. He is driven by a desire to protect them and others from the injustices of the republic. He is also motivated by a desire for justice in fighting against the corrupt government that oppresses the people o his society
- Goals: Day's ultimate goal is to bring about a revolution and overthrow the oppressive regime of the republic. He seeks to expose the governments corruption to inspire others to join the fight. Additionally, Day hopes to reunite with his family and create a better life for them outside of the republic.

- June Iparis
- Struggles: Initially, she struggles with the loss of her family, but it evolves into a struggle with her identity and her relationship with Day. Additionally, she struggles with the burden of responsibility as she becomes involved with the rebellion against a corrupt government
- Motivations: She is motivated by a desire to right the wrongs in her society. Initially, she wants revenge for her family's death, but later in the book she wants to create a better world for all people.
- Goals: Her primary goal is to take down the corrupt government to bring change. Her goals s expand to include societal reform as she becomes more involved in the resistance. Throughout the book, she tries to uncover the truth about government actions to expose their lies.
