- Texas Wanted to be annexed to the United States. There were two main problems which included the slave state conflicts and Mexico never relinquished claim over Texas.
- Mexico is killing Americans on their own soil
- Sending 4,000 troops marching cannot be a random occurrence, clearly this was the plan.
- James K. Polk first tried to purchase the land peacefully by buying the land form Mexico. His goal was topurchase California and New Mexico and to gain approval of the Rio Grande as the Texas border.

- Mexico disapproved of this offer, so Polk sentZachary Taylor and 4,000 men army to march fromthe Nueces River to the Rio Grande. Mexico saw this as an act of aggression, and they fired shots at the American troops.
- Polk used the Mexican attack as an excuse and used “Mexico killing Americans on American soil” to declare war. People like Abraham Lincoln suspected that the 4,000 soldiers were used to instigate the attack of Mexico.
- Stephen Kearny marched from Kansas to Santa Fe, New Mexico to capture the land. When he arrived the metupper-class Mexicans who wanted to join the U.S instead of resist against the U.S. He was ale o capture New Mexico without any bloodshed or war.
- Though the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo Mexico agreed to Rio Grande as southern TX border and ceded New Mexico and California the United States. In turn the Us had to pay them 15 million dollars. Additionally US pays Mexico 10 million for the Gadsden Purchase, in which they gain more territory.
