- Oh wow! says Tallulah. That makes more sense now. See we have something called a Shaman one is a spiritual leader and healer and they pass on knowledge and perform rituals. They can also be known as the medicine man. We have a few different rituals that we do. We have a smudging ceremony where sacred herbs are burned and smoke is brushed over the eyes, mouth, ears, hands, and heart as a way of purifying ourselves. There is also something called a Powwow where we all gather as a community for singing, dancing, and drumming as a celebration of heritage, healing, and good community relationships. Next we use sweat lodges which are heated dome-shaped structure where smoke is produced and it is also a way of purifying and promoting healthy living, Tallulah describes.
- That is so cool. Is that all that you guys do? Fatima asks excitedly. Nope there's more, Tallulah states. We also have Potlatch's where we give gifts to family and friends and dance and sing to celebrate events and bring attention to the hosts generosity and wealth. There are also Sun Dances that people of Prairies or Plains celebrate at the beginning of summer to mark the beginning of the buffalo hunt. They take part in dances and piercing the body as a symbol of renewal. Finally we have the 4 scared medicines. They are tobacco, sweetgrass, cedar, and sage. They all have special purposes that help with healing, cleansing, or purifying, and are used in some of our different ceremonies, Tallulah explains.
- That sounds so interesting. It is very different from Islam, Fatima says. She starts to wonder if they have the same ethical views on what it means to be a good person. Hey Tallulah, she says, do you know what Shariah Law is? No I do not, Tallulah replies. Well, it is our laws that we have to follow. It includes things like our laws around food and veiling. Following these laws helps us to be good Muslims and live the way Allah wants us to.
- 'What is veiling? Tallulah asks. It is this Hijab that I wear. Muslim women are supposed to wear it to be more covered because it helps strengthen our relationship to God, Fatima says. Wow we have very different rules than you guys do, Tallulah replies. I am taught three main things. That we should interfere in a demanding or negative way, community is very important, and that everything is shared. I am also taught about the 7 grandfather teachings that are wisdom, love, respect, bravery, honesty, humility, and truth. These are things that are very important to have in order to be the best version of yourself, Tallulah explains. They both admire each other's different rules and beliefs and find it so cool.
- I think we should be best friends, Fatima says. I do too. You should come inside to play, says Tallulah as they arrive at her house. That sounds great, says Fatima very excitedly. They go inside and spend the next few hours playing together. They are both so happy about this new friendship and their new knowledge about religion.
- Wow that's interesting. I am Indigenous. Tell me more about being Muslim, Tallulah says. Okay well my religion is called Islam and we believe in a God called Allah, Fatima explains.
