First the process starts when a candidate formally announces that they are running for office. They normally publicly announce they are running at public events by first giving their vision and motive. Candidates must file papers with the FEC (Federal Election Commision) to allow them to raise fund raisers, etc.

After the announcements the candidates participate in the primary election, these early elections determine the delegates who will vote for candidates at the party's national convention
Each major political party holds a national convention, the convention delegates officially vote to choose party nominees, and at that time where nominees announce their running mate (vice president) and introduce the party's platforms
Once the nominees are confirmed, the general election campaign beings, this includes public debates, rallies, advertisement, and intense media coverages. Voters cast their ballots on Election Day which is usually the first Tuesday of November in the U.S

To become president a candidate must secure at least 270 of the 538 electoral votes
in mid-december, the Electoral College meets to cast its official votes for president and vice president which are then certified by Congress in early January
Before the new president comes into office a transition period begins, allowing them for transfer responsibilities, the elected president forms a transition team to prepare for governance and select key officials
Finally the process ends with the inauguration , a ceremonial event where the new president takes oath of office and delivers and inaugural speech explaining their vision for the country
