Suzanne Aubert lived in a village near Lyon in France with her parents Louis & Clarice. Growing up she helped sick people!
Suzanne sets sail for NZ on 4 September 1860 on a whaling ship unsuitable for passengers to pursue her dreams of helping people!
Suzanne worked at a Maori girls school to help educate them.
Aubert established orphanages for abandoned children and provided care for them.
She started 2 hospital in Wellington the first, St Joseph in 1900 and Our Lady’s home of compassion in 1907.
She established New Zealand’s first soup kitchen, which still serves some 40,000 meals a year in Wellington.
On Christmas Day 1885, Bishop Redwood blessed St Joseph’s Church. When it was burnt down three years later, Suzanne set off on a collecting tour of New Zealand, returning in 1893 with £1000 – enough to build a new church and convent.
