Storyboard Text

  • This is Coco. She is a brave nine year old who was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes one year ago.
  • Type 1 Diabetes is a condition that means her body doesn't make insulin anymore. Insulin helps make food into energy.
  • Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) is not Cocos' fault, it's just something that happened to her!
  • The second instruction a PDM can give is called a basil. Basil is an insulin dosage that happens once every hour of the day. It helps keep Coco's blood sugars steady when she's wide awake or fast asleep. Too much insulin can make her blood sugar go low and too little can make it go high.
  • Coco's body gets the insulin she needs through ahelpful device called a pump. This pump is a littlemachine that stays on her arm, stomach, or leg and she puts a new one on every few days. This device isconnected to another helpful machine that gives it instructions.
  • There are two kinds of instructions a PDM can give. The first one is called a bolus. A bolus gives a certain amount of insulin based on Coco's blood sugar and the food she eats. So whenever Coco eats food she tells her PDM which calculates how much insulin to tell her pump to deliver. Sometimes when her sugar is super high she tells her PDM to calculate an insulin dosage to correct it.
  • T1D doesn't stop Coco from doing anything! She just has to adjust her insulin dosages accordingly. Exercise makes blood sugars go low so an hour before gym class at school Coco reduces her basil for a few hours.
