- Italy's unification also call Risorgimento was a movement to unite italy into a cultural and political entity.
- It lasted from 1848-1870
- Giuseppe Mazzini and his pupil Garibaldi attempted but failed on trying to unite Italy by democracy.
- a politician, Camillo di Cavour who using the tools of realpolitik, united Italy under the crown of Sardinia.
- Cavour in 1855 involved the British and the French on the Crimean War.
- using the peace conference to give international publicity to the cause of Italian unification.
- For their help France received#160;Nice and Savoy from Italy.
- #160;After signing an alliance treatment with France in 1858, Italy and France went onto defeating Austria their biggest rivals.
- Cavour ultimately sent troops to fight against the red army, and after many succesful battles, he organized popular votes to annex Naples to Sardina.
- Thanks to the success of Cavour, Garibaldi came out of his exile with his red army in order to liberate Italy by himself.
- Cavour won the votes , and Italy became a united nation state under Sardanian king Victor Emmanuel II in 1861.
