- Ugh I don’t have anywhere to throw my trash. oops whatever I’m just going to leave it there.
- HEY STOP! Did I just see you throw your trash on the ground?
- Yeah, why do you care? It’s only one piece of trash.
- Littering can hurt the environment in many ways. For starters, litter pollutes the air.
- Researchers estimate that over 40% of the world's litter is burned into the open air, which releases toxic chemicals and microparticles into the air we breathe
- Oh well. There is so much air on earth, why should I care
- Because the chemicals that the trash releases can cause health problems such as respiratory issues. These chemicals can also be a starting base for acid rain
- If there is only three problems about littering, it doesn’t seem like a big issue
- That’s not all, hazardous chemicals can leak out of the litter and pollute the soil and water nearby . These toxins eventually enter the human body through the water we drink and the plants that are grown in the toxic soil
- Oh no! So that means that there would be toxins inside of me right now?
- Yes! And not only that but 10% of all the litter in the U.S ends up in the ocean! That means that there is 26 million tons of litter in the ocean!
- If litter is dumped into the ocean, the oxygen in the water could be reduced which results in poor health for marine life due to the lack of oxygen.
- Many animals mistake the garbage as food and choke on it or suffocate. By leaving your trash on the ground, that makes you part of the problem.
- Littering causes tons of problems. I will make sure to pick up my garbage and never litter again!
