Storyboard Text

  • After the suitors are killed by Odysseus, Hermes guides the ghost to the underworld as they, "trailed after with high thin cries as bats cry in the depths of a dark haunted cavern, shrilling, flittering, wild when one drops from the chain--" (24. 6). This scene broadens the question about the fate of the suitors because of their atrocities.
  • Achilles and Agamemnon discuss Odysseus' Journey and praise both him and his wife, Penelope and their tenacity. "So they traded stories, the two ghosts standing there in the House of Death, far in the hidden depths below the earth." (24. 225). Even the dead, respect Odysseus for his determination. Which makes Odysseus a hero in his own way.
  • Nearing the end of the book, Odysseus goes to a remote farm in Ithaca where he meets his father, Laertes, "Father--I am your son--myself, the man you're seeking, home after twenty years, on native ground at last!" (24. 359). This long-awaited, heartfelt scene of the father and son is the first interaction of the two in the book, bringing a happy ending to the book.
