  • Third Choral Ode
  • Help us Zeus! We fear that our great King Oedipus has fulfilled his divine prophecy!
  • Third Episode
  • I come from Corinth bearing news. King Polybus is dead. I still remember when you were a baby and I brought you to him as a gift after one of King Laius’ shepherds left you at Cithaeron.
  • What? So I wasn't his real son? Who are my birth parents? I'd like to talk to this shepherd so I can find out where I came from.
  • No! Please don't! You don't have to do that...
  • Fourth Choral Ode
  • We anxiously await the discovery of King Oedipus' true identity!
  • The chorus desperately calls on Zeus as they start to fear that Oedipus' destiny was proven true, and that he really has killed his father and married his mother.
  • Choral Dialogue
  • I don't regret blinding myself. It's given me a new perspective, and it's not like I have anything left I'd want to see anyway. But I want to say that I deserve to be punished for my crimes, so please just kill me or send me away.
  • I still don't understand your decision to blind yourself, but I respect it. Now, I'm going to respect your wishes and banish you to Cithaeron, so stop weeping and say goodbye to your daughters.
  • A messenger comes from Corinth to tell Jocasta and Oedipus that King Polybus (who Oedipus believes to be his father) is dead. The messenger reveals to Oedipus that he was adopted, telling him that he was the one who gave baby Oedipus to Polybus as a gift after one of King Laius’ shepherds brought the baby to Cithaeron. Oedipus decides to find that shepherd so that he can find out more about his birth parents. Jocasta, realizing that Oedipus is her son, desperately attempts to convince Oedipus not to look any further for his family, but he doesn’t listen.
  • Envoi
  • Oedipus, the mighty king who saved Thebes from the Curse of the Sphinx, has tragically fallen after fulfilling his unfortunate destiny.
  • The chorus anticipates the joy of discovering Oedipus’ true identity and background
  • Epilogue
  • There is nothing left worth seeing in this wretched world! I choose not to see at all!!
  • People of Thebes! Queen Jocasta is dead!!
  • Oedipus describes everything he lost, and the things he'd no longer like to see in order to defend his decision to blind himself to the chorus. He then begs Creon to punish him with either death or expulsion. Lastly, Creon brings Oedipus his daughters Antigone and Ismene so that he can tell them goodbye before he is exiled to Cithaeron, the land at which he was originally meant to die.
  • The chorus briefly summarizes the tragedy of Oedipus, who quickly rose to become a proud King and savior of Thebes, only to fall and end his story with tragedy.
  • An official reveals to the town that Queen Jocasta killed herself after realizing that Oedipus was her son. After finding her dead, Oedipus stabs his own eyes, blinding himself.
