Before anesthesia, surgeries were extremely painful. In the Industrial Revolution, they began using anesthesia such as ether and chloroform so that patients would not feel pain. Thanks to anesthesia, surgeons were able to perform more complicated operations without the patient suffering. The surgeries were more precise and less invasive, reducing the risk of death and infections. Anesthesia changed the way surgeries were performed.

Vaccines are important to prevent diseases. Physician Edward Jenner pioneered smallpox vaccination in 1796. He observed that people exposed to cowpox did not contract human smallpox. Jenner inoculated people with the cowpox virus and it worked. This was one of the first examples of disease prevention through vaccines.
