- Slide: 1
- "Everything about the house seemed normal, although I [know] it must be chock-full of crazy people"
- Ester and her mom are going to Doctor Gordon's private hospital. Ester describes the place as "yellow clapboard walls of the large house, with it's encircling veranda, gleaming in the sun, but no people strolled on the green dome of the lawn" (page 140).
- Slide: 2
- "He must be seeing if it was a full pack"
- Finishes counting
- Ester and her mom enter the hospital and Ester finds the place uneasy. She "realized that none of the people were moving." (page 141). After observing more closely she "saw that some of the people were indeed moving, but with such small, birdlike gestures [she] had not at first [discern] them."(page 141).

- "I'm going to jump out of the window, I'm going to jump out of the window, I'm going to jump out of the window"
- Ester follows Doctor Gordon, as she follows him she hears noises. When the nurse turns the corner, Ester sees that "the woman was [being] dragged by, waving her arms and struggling in the grip of the nurse" (page 142).
