- cod fishery began early fur trade between the Europeans and the first nations. they realized trading is key in establishing strong foundation of mutual benefits the first nation believed that fur trade made friendship and peace.

- The fur trade was needed for the growth of new France. The french and the haudenosaunee made a truce in 1701 that was called the great peace of Montreal. The first nation people kicked out the wendat from the fur trade. The first nation people converted to Christianity but also kept practicing there own religion. Independent traders were declared illegal when trading post are established. Also Beaver population went down
- Britain offed a monopoly in an area called Rupert's land. HBC could not colonize due to the harsh climate. Anishabe and coureir de bois were used as middle men for HBC. A voyageur would work to make long trip up the St.Lawrence river. the first nation and the french had families. there children would be called metis or mix of french and first nation.
