- Kie just graduated from highschool and is now at Millsaps College for the first time.
- . .
- Kie's first interaction with a girl that will soon become his girlfriend, Nzola.
- "You like to read, huh? she asked. I didn't say anything. I just nodded up and down in slo-mo. "Oh, okay," she said" (Laymon 123).
- Kie and Nzola start to recieve hate and death threats because of an essay Kie wrote.
- "We watched them watch us as we walked to Nzola's car. After one of them said "Write about this," and others started calling me a "nigger" and Nzola a "nigger bitch" I went back to my room to get my gun (Laymon 149).
- Kie's mom tells him to come home because she is worried for his safety.
- "Come home," you told me on the phone that night. "Do not step foot on that campus again. You've done all you can do. There are some amazing people at that school, but white peoples ignorance is not your responsibility. Come home and leave those crazy people alone" (Laymon 149).
- President George Harmon told you I was lucky not to be thrown in jail for taking the library book without checking it out. He claimed if Millsaps turned the secuirty tape over to the police they would arrest me on sight" (Laymon 154).
- Kie getting expelled because he "stole" a library book.
