This is significant because it allows for people to speak freely and express themselves and their identity without causing harm to others and without fearing harm.

  • The right for every citizen to vote in an election and run for office with a few restrictions. It is significant because it allows for a more diverse government by allowing all democratic groups to vote.

  • The right for citizens to travel to and from the country/provinces. It is important, as a large country, that citizens are able to freely travel for work and for family.

  • Some of the legal rights in Canada include the right to life, liberty, and security, the guarantee that people will not be subjected to unreasonable search and seizure, the right not to be arbitrarily detained or imprisoned, and to be charged within reasonable time. These rights are important because it keeps the government and poilce force from an abuse of power.
  • Every individual is equal before and under the law and has the right to equal protection and equal benefit of the law without discrimination, with some limits. For example, programs set up to improve the conditions of certain disadvantaged groups or individuals are permissible even if they are seen as discriminatory to the majority. This is significant because it favours equity over equality and allows for a just system.
