The French and Indian War was the result of France and Great Britain’s conflict over the Ohio River Valley and other territory. Neither nations had colonists living in the region, both of them wanted to trade furs with the Native Americans who lived there. The French built several forts in the region prior to the war, to protect their fur trade, but Great Britain sent in troops to capture these forts.
Boston Massacre 1770
In colonial America, paper was extremely important. The colonists used paper for lots of things, like receipts to document the sale of goods, books, graduation diplomas, newspapers, playing cards, and many other items.
Boston Tea Party 1773
Charles Townshend created The Townshend Acts. He created them in an attempt to raise money for England and assert that the British retained full power over the American colonies. The acts imposed taxes on imported goods such as glass, paper, paint, and tea.
Battles of Lexington and Concord 1775
British soldiers stood guard at the Custom House, where the British stored tax money. Colonists began shouting and throwing rocks at the soldiers. One of the rocks hit a soldier, and a shot rang out. The soldiers panicked and began firing at the colonists. When the smoke settled, five colonists were dead and seven were wounded.
In the early 1760s, the British government began taxing the colonists’ imports of products such as sugar, coffee, and paper. Rather than paying the tax, many colonists refused to drink British tea. The British began to ship low-priced tea to the colonies to encourage colonists to continue buying tea from Britain. When three ships arrived in Boston Harbor carrying this inexpensive tea, the colonists refused to let the British sailors unload their cargo. More than 300 crates of tea were thrown overboard into Boston Harbor.
By the time the British arrived at Lexington, the colonists had troops ready for a standoff. After the American resistance at Lexington faded, the British moved on to Concord and met an even larger resistance. Around 320 to 400 American patriots fought at Concord. Although the colonists had won, these battles were the first of many in what would end up being an eight-year war for American independence.
