- Another evidence is through Carbon Isotope Excursion. There was a shift in the carbon isotope ratio of Carbon 13 during PETM. In some records fo bulk carbonate, it is about 2%, in some records of terrestrial carbonate or organix matter it exceeds 6%. With the available information, estimates for the carbon addition ranged from about 2000 to 7000 gigatons.

- You're right son, and this is not recent at all! This has been going for a while and due to more human activity we are making the climate wrose. There are more frequent droughts, oceans are warming. This not only affects the Earth but also animals and us. Animals are facing challenges in adapting to new conditions. Rising temperature also affects their physiological processes such as metabolism and energy. Potentially leading to decreased growth rates and reproductive success. During PETM the planet was ice-free, but currently, it is not which is why we are also seeing loss of sea ice and melting of glaciers and ice sheets. Due to this, the sea level rises each year, and the world experiences intense heat waves. We really need to take actions right now! We are already overdue for an improvement.

- Since at least 1997, PETM has been investigated in geoscience as an analogue to understand the effect of global warming and massive carbon inputs on the ocean and atmosphere. Professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences James Zachos notes that if by 2030 the business as usual scenario continues it could potentially bring global temperatures to a level the planet has not seen in 50 million years. PETM now is often used as a case study to predict what might happen to Earth when the global temperatures rise even more.
