- Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria- Hungary was driving down a road in Bosnia when his driver took a wrong turn. Gavrilo Princip was in a bar and saw the archduke outside. He shot Ferdinand in the neck and assassinated him. This led to a dominion affect that eventual caused WWI.

- After the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, Serbia and Austria- Hungary declared war on each other.
- Because of alliances, Russia came to help Serbia and this led to Germany declaring war on Russia. This officially started World War I.

- The war affected soldiers physically and mentally. Trench warfare was a way of fighting that caused soldiers to live in pits in the ground where they caught many diseases like tench foot and dysentery.
- Many soldiers also suffered from shell shock. It was a type of post dramatic stress disorder which caused the soldier to go through nightmares, confusion, fatigue, and tremors.
