  • On the night of September 18, 1931, the Japanese Kwantung Army staged a minor explosion on a Japanese-owned railway line near Mukden, China. The damage was minimal, but the Japanese used this manufactured incident as an excuse to launch a full-scale invasion of the entire region of Manchuria, claiming it was an act of Chinese aggression requiring "self-defense".

  • The Chinese government, dealing with internal conflicts, offered little resistance, and the Japanese quickly occupied the entire region. In March 1932, Japan established the puppet state of Manchukuo. They installed the last emperor of China, Puyi, as the nominal leader, but the country was entirely controlled by the Japanese military and used for its rich natural resources and industrial expansion.

  • China appealed to the League of Nations for help. The League condemned Japan's actions but took no meaningful economic or military action. In response to international criticism, Japan simply withdrew from the League of Nations in 1933. The failure to stop Japanese aggression emboldened other expansionist powers (Germany and Italy) and set a dangerous precedent that made a wider global conflict more likely.
