  • Climax
  • George Orwell is a European sub-divisional police officer in Burma, in the 1920’s. Because he is a white police officer working for the british, he is hated by all the Burmese people.
  • Falling Action
  • One day, he hears news of an elephant trashing a bazaar. He finds the elephant and asks for a rifle for self defense against the elephant. He goes to check the elephant, and a large crowd of people gather around him. They clearly want him to kill the elephant, even though the elephant has become very calm now and is minding its own business. Orwell does not want to shoot the elephant, but he fears that he will look like a fool if he doesn’t.
  • Resolution
  • He shoots the elephant once. But because he doesn't know how to kill an elephant, it didn't die. Because of this, he shoots it a few more times. He couldn’t bear the sight and walked away. The burmese people strip the dead elephant to its bones.
  • He feels very guilty about shooting the elephant. He learns that it took the elephant half an hour to die.
  • The owner was furious but couldn't do anything because he was indian. Different europeans had different opinions on his actions. He tells us that he did it solely to avoid looking like a fool.
