Storyboard Text

  • If you have a son, he will kill you and marry your wife.
  • Okay, I will take him to King Polybus and Queen Merope.
  • I can't leave him like this.
  • I need to run away!
  • You will kill your father and marry your mother in the future.
  • King Laius and Queen Jocasta had a son. King Laius was warned that if he had a son, his son would kill him and marry his wife. In order to prevent this prophecy, King Laius gets a servant to pin Oedipus's ankles together and pin him to a tree.
  • The servant hangs Oedipus by a tree above a mountain to die. The servant, however, was unable to leave him like this, so he gave him to a shepherd. The shepherd brings him to King Polybus and Queen Merope.
  • Oedipus grows up, and eventually, someone tells him that his parents are not his birth parents, and when Oedipus asks the King and Queen, they deny it. Oedipus consults an oracle that tells him he will kill his father and marry his mother.
  • To prevent this, Oedipus leaves Corinth and on his way, he passes King Laius, who he did not know was his birth father, and kills him out of self-defense. This means that part of the prophecy was fulfilled.
  • Oedipus answers a riddle by a Sphinx correctly and was allowed to pass into Thebes. It was said that whoever answered the riddle correctly would be made the King of hebes and marry the queen. This then fulfills the prophecy. Oedipus and Queen Jocasta have 4 children together.
  • In the future, it is revealed that Oedipus killed his birth father and married his birth mother, and after his mother finds out, she hangs herself. Oedipus finds her and stabs his eyes out of distress. He eventually dies in Colonus.
