  • The Little Rock Nine arrived at Central Rock High School because of the Brown V. Board of Education law which called racial segregation unconstitutional. 17 black students from around the state of Arkansas, were enrolled into schools with only white students. 9 of those students were enrolled at Little Rock Central High. When they arrived, they were slammed with threats of lynchings, abusive language and just general bullying and hatred because they were black, Orval Faubus, governor of Arkansas at the time, was against the idea of desegregation and against the Little Rock 9 trying to challenge it. He called upon the National Guard to stop African American students from entering the school.
  • At the beginning of this protest Dwight Eisenhower, president at the time, wanted to stay out of the situation and maintain a neutral opinion about whether the students should or shouldn't be in the schools. However, later on, he decided that those african american students had every right to be in the same schools as the white students. Following his change of heart, he called the US Airborne Division to escort the 9 students into, around and out of school. This overruled the National Guard. His actions caused the black students to be able to safely attend school.
  • Desegregation didn't settle in right away. The black students still faced a lot of hate and discrimination. Overtime, the integration of african american students into the school improved. To this day black people still experience racism and discrimination, but it is nowhere near as bad as it used to be.
