  • Slide: 1
  • Strengths of the Union
  • Two huge strengths of the North are it's better transportation, namely its railroads. This helped in transporting supplies. Another advantage of the Union is that it had a lot more usable farmland for crops. The crops were made into food for soldiers.
  • Slide: 2
  • Weaknesses of the Union
  • Weaknesses of the Confederates
  • One of the many weaknesses of the South is their smaller population. In 1861, the South had a population of around 5.5 million, not including the 3.5 million enslaved people, whereas the North had around 22 million, including the slaves.
  • A big disadvantage of the North is their lack of military leadership. Before Ulysses S. Grant took over military efforts later in the war, Abraham Lincoln could not find a competent general who could effectively lead the Union to victory.
  • Slide: 3
  • An important advantage of the South is its "ideal" soldiers. They were horsemen with experience in battle and firearms, much better than the North's young soldiers with little to no experience. Another advantage is their homefield advantage. Because they were fighting a defensive war, they had the lay of the land and therefore the upper hand over the Union.
