Hey Margaret, Why do we have a constitution and what is one?
Thats a good question Mark! The constitution is a set of important rights that everyone is entiteled to and some big rules. It dosnt hold every rule, like to looking at a phone while driving because that is not as important as other things.
What do the powers do?
There are three groups with each entitled to a power. The power for the Executive group is that they are the ones that usally come up with the ideas for the laws, In the executive group there is the prime ministerand the the cabinet. There is the judictary power that is the judges. They have the power to choose if an action should be called a crime in court. The last power is the paralment. They have to power to vote on new suggestions for laws and to change the constitution with a referendum.
In the constitution there is the seperation of powers. It entitles a power to a group of people
But you said something about a referendum, what does that do and what is it?
Thanks for that Margaret! I now have the knowledge to understand what a constitution is.
Good enquiry Mark, a referendum is a vote to change a law or to add one/ remove one. People and the executive group come up with the idea and and fight for it. Polloticians have a voting on weather we should have the law or not. This is called a reading. This is called a reading. After, the members read the law againg and do a second reading. They have in total 6 readings and then the minister must give it a royal asset and then it is a new law.
The biggest change to the constitution happened in 1967.
What was so signifant about 1967?
In 1967 there was not a lot of Aboriginal rights. They were restricted from doin many things and were seperated from white people. On 1967 people got together to try and remove the part from the consitution that wouldnt give Aboriginal people rights.
It took a while but in the end they succeded, they got enough votes to change the section in the constituition. From that day Aboriginals had the right to do many things.
But margaret, couldnt sharing the powers to 3 different groups end up bad?
Thanks for all the information you gave me today, it will help me in the future! :)
Yes thats true Mark. If one group uses the power wrong things can end up bad. Like if one group uses the power irresposibley it could end up horrible situation.
The worst thing about it you cant do much about it. Like if a judge charged someone wrong, cant do much about it. So we must hope that we have some good leaders.
