  • Direct Quote: "It fell about the Martinmas time, And a gay time it was then, When our goodwife got puddings to make, And she's boild them in the pan" (1-4).Summary: It was a happy time for them. The wife had made puddings and boiled them in a pan.
  • Direct Quote: "The wind sae cauld blew south and north, and blew into the floor; Quoth our goodman to our goodwife, "Gae out and bar the door"" (5-8).Summary: The wind had blown open the door. The wife had asked the husband to get out of his seat and bar the door.
  • Direct Quote: "" My hand is in my hussyfskap, Goodman, as ye may see; An it should nae be barrd this hundred year, It's no be barrd for me"" (9-12).Summary: The wife said she was busy doing chores ,so she asked the husband to bar the door. The husband refused to bar the door.
  • Direct Quote: "They made a paction tween them twa, They made it firm and sure, That the first word whae'er should speak, Should rise and bar the door" (13-16).Summary: The made an agreement between the two of them to solve the problem. The agreement was the person who spoke first would have to bar the door.
  • Direct Quote: "Then by there came two gentlemen, At twelve o'clock at night, And they could neither see house nor hall, Nor coal nor candle-light" (17-20).Summary: The two gentlemen at twelve o'clock at night were wandering around and could not find a house. Then they found the house with the door open.
  • Direct Quote: "But ne'er word wad ane o' them speak, For barring of the door. And first they ate the white puddings, And then ate the black; Tho muckle thought the goodwife to hersel, Yet ne'er a word she spake" (23-28).Summary: The husband and wife sat there eating there pudding. They sat there in silence for many hours.
