- It's 1933 in Great Faith Mississippi ,Cassie lives with her brothers with Mama and Big Ma, Cassie's grandma. the main character, Cassie is 9,Stacey being 12 almost 13,Christopher John is 7, and Little Man is 6 years old.

- Mr. Walles burns Mr. Perry and his two nephews. One nephew dies and the other two are severely burned. The Wallaces brag about what they did among their friend Asia it was cool, but Mr. Walles was never arrested.
- FALLING ACTION
- Mama tries to get the people to boycott the Wallaces' store because of a fight between TJ and stacey. With the help of a lawyer, Mr. Jamison, Papa and Mr. Morrison travel to Vicksburg to pick up supplies for some families.
- RESOLUTION
- Mr. Granger wants to buy the Logans' land, and is mad that the Logans don't know their place in life.Mr Wallece was so mad he got Mama fired from her job, Papa is shot on one of his trips, and sum how the property mortgage is due in full. So they have get Hammer to help.
- RW and Melvin Simms blame T.J. for a robbery and murder at the store. The Wallaces and the Simms brothers take T.J. and his family outside and threaten to beat T.J.
- T.J.'s beating is left behind as everyone, both races work together to extinguish a fire in the farm fields. Cassie realizes that Papa started the fire to bypass more harm.
