June 28, 1914 was the day that Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated. He was assassinated by a man named Gavrilo Princip. He was part of a group called the Black Hand. After a few previous failed attempts by his group members, Princip fired twice, one hitting Franz Ferdinand, the other hitting Ferdinand's wife Sophie. Right after the event happened Princip was arrested and the Archduke and his wife were sent to seek medical help. Unfortunately they both died.

On May 7, 1915, the Lusitania sank. It was on a voyage from New York to Britain. It had 1,959 people on board. When the Lusitania was hit by a torpedo launched by a German U-boat, 1,198 people were killed, only 761 people had survived. There were about 159 Americans on board the ship during the voyage.
