There is more than one kind of freedom. Freedom to and freedom from. In the days of anarchy, it was freedom to. Now you are being given freedom from. Don't underrate it.
This place is a loony bin...
We've been sent good weather.
Which I receive with joy.
June Osborne, her husband, Luke, and her daughter, Hannah, attempt to flee to Canada in order to escape the oppressive government of Gilead, formerly known as the USA. Luke is most likely shot, and June and Hannah are separated by the Eyes, Gilead's police force.
This is hilarious.
This will sound silly... I would like you to play a game of Scrabble with me.
June is taken to the Red Center, a school repurposed for the re-education and training of Handmaids. She and other women are taught that their only purpose in life is to have children for the commanders of Gilead and their infertile wives.
What has she done?
We can't say, ma'am. Sorry.
Once June is at her new posting, she is given a new name, Offred. She meets her walking partner, Ofglen, who is part of an underground smuggling ring, Mayday. They talk discreetly about their lives before Gilead.
...It's snowing.
Offred's Commander, Fred Waterford, invites her to his study to play scrabble with him, a very illegal act punishable by death. He lets her do things women aren't allowed to do, like read magazines and books.
...All right.
Ofglen hangs herself because she knew the Eyes were coming after her. Shortly after Offred finds this out, she is taken by what seems to be the Eyes, although Mr.Waterford's driver, Nick, assures her that it is Mayday.
Whether this is my end or a new beginning I have no way of knowing: I have given myself over to the hands of strangers.
