  • I grew up in a small Bavarian village in southern Germany. I lived a very traditional German life with my older brother and parents.
  • Rosa! Mother wanted me to tell you she washed your other folk costume for today!

  • At age 17, I was so excited to began studies at a trade school in Wurzburg about 25 miles away from home.

  • I got a job with the government doing clerical work; I would work for the school board as well as a transcriber for a lawyer.

  • My village had many Jewish citizens, many working as tradesmen or famers and being very prosperous.

  • By 1933, Hitler had put many restrictions on Jewish people, and many were fearful of the changes that began to happen.

  • Jewish people would ask my mother, being an English citizen to teach them English in case they had the chance to emigrate. Some Jews did emigrate, but others were not as fortunate.
  • Please can you teach my boy and me, it's just the two of us! We have to leave before things get worse.
