- In the text Fences Troy explains to his son Lyons why it's important to work and provide.¨TROY What's the matter, you too good to carry people's rubbish? Where do you think the ten dollars you are talking about come from? I'm just supposed to haul people's rubbish and give my money to you cause you are too lazy to work. You are too lazy to work and wanna know why you ain't got what I got(wilson20). In this quote Troy gets upset with Lyons because of him asking for 10 Dollars, then speaks bad about being a garbage man and wants to borrow money from him.
- In the text Fences Cory asks Troy why he does not like him and Troy replies with¨ TROY Likes you? Who the hell says I got to like you? What law says I got to like you? Wanna stand up in my face and ask a damn fool-ass question like that. Talking about liking somebody. Come here, boy, when I talk to you.¨In this quote Troys tries to explain to cory that you should go through life by yourself and not worry about other people's thoughts.
- In the story, Fences Rose tells Troy that Alberta passed away during labor and gets frustrated and calls out to death again and states.¨ Alright ... Mr. Death. See now ... I'm gonna tell you what I'm gonna do. I'm gonna take and build me a fence around this yard. See? .(Wilson 79). In this quote Troy yells out the window because of life being very hard. Alberta passing makes him feel that death is getting close and is taking the people he loves instead of him.
