Afternoon: The young Court Paris asks Juliet's father Capulet for Juliet's hand in marriage.
Younger than she are happy mothers made.
My child is yet a stranger in the world. She hath not seen the change of fourteen years. Let two more summers wither in their pride eve we may think her ripe to be a bride.
On condition that Juliet agrees, Capulet gives his consent. He also invites Paris to a masked ball, which is to take place the same evening at Capulet's house. He instructs his servant Peter to deliver the invitations.
Go, sirrah, trudge alone trough fair Verona. Find those persons out whose names are written there, and to them say my house an welcome on their pleasant stay.
GUEST LIST
After a short conversation, it turns out that the masked ball will take place at Capulet's house. Peter thanks them and says goodbye.
Peter, the servant, however, cannot read and therefore asks to passers-by for help. They are Romeo and Benvolio, whom he does not know are Montagues.
God 'i' good e'en. I pray, sir, can you read?
Stay, fellow. I can read."Seigneur Martino and his wife an daughters,..."
On the guest list Romeo had also seen the name Roseline, the name of the woman he is in love with. He sees the ball as an opportunity to see her. His cousin Benvolio however, has another idea...
Go thither, and with untainted eye compare her face with some that I shall show, and I will make thee think thy swan a crow. (...) Tut, you saw her fair, none else being by, herself poised with herself in either eye. (...)
I'll go along, no such sight to be shown, but to rejoice in splendor of mine own."
