I have noticed this opportunity to apply to become an RCMP officer. I think it would be a great fit for me!
That sounds exciting! you should definitely apply for it!
Scene 2: A tough choice
Hi there, I would like to apply for the RCMP officer job.
We do no accept men with turbans due to safety reasons. If you would like to be considered for this opportunity you will need to get rid of the turban.
Scene 3: Unfair World
Well there's nothing we can do about it as of now, it's the RCMP's policy.
No, they said I can't work as an officer because of my turban
DId you get the job?
That's no fair, a turban is apart of our religion. You should not be discriminated against because of this.
The RCMP had a policy forbidding Sikh officers from wearing turbans on duty in the 1980s. This is an example of critical race theory in action. Racial and ethnic prejudice and discrimination, according to Critical Race Theory, are ingrained in institutionalized ideas and practises, not necessarily in the conscious acts of people. We can observe that the RCMP, as a legal entity, is discriminating against Sikhs, and that many RCMP members are biassed against Sikhs and the group.
Scene 4: Twenty First Century
Baltej Singh Dhillon had to choose between serving his nation or following his religious faith when he was admitted into the RCMP. He shouldn't have to make this choice, and he wouldn't have to make it if the world could be a racism free place.
Scene 5: Bill 21
But it is my way of expressing my religion, you can't discriminate against me because of that
Even though you are the best fit for this job, we are unable to hire you due your head covering.
He chose to fight for his religious rights, through protests. However, it was not until almost 10 years later in 1990, the federal government finally removes the ban preventing Sikhs in the RCMP from wearing turbans. We can clearly see here that organizational policies and practices systematically discriminated against Baljeet Singh Dhillon because he was a Sikh wearing a turban, this is called institutional racism.
Scene 6: Discrimnation
Wow! that is so unfair. I am being discriminated against.
Thank you so much!
Congratulations! you are hired. See you Monday.
Although in the modern world racism is made much less acceptable and is not tolerated it still exists in places like Quebec. We see the wife of Baljeet Singh is facing discrimination since she is being judged and treated unfairly because of her group membership and religious belongings.
I really hope i get this job. I really need it.
Now in 2021....
Well, she's never gonna get this job with that scarf on her head. One less person to worry about for me.
Bill 21 was approved in June 2019, prohibiting people of Quebec who work in the public sector from wearing religious symbols while performing public duties. It unfairly punishes those who wear their faith as a form of expression. And, like all Canadians, they lose their right to freedom of expression and religion, as well as the ability to make their own decisions without government intervention. People should not be compelled to choose between their religious beliefs, their identity, and their career. The government should not be able to force its values on Quebec Citizens, nor should they be able to tell people what they may and cannot wear. Bill 21 is particularly harmful to immigrant and minority populations.
I am sorry I can't do anything about it. Bill 21 was passed by the government prohibiting this.
We see that racism, discrimination against a person or people on the basis of their membership in a particular racial or ethnic group, still takes place in society today. Even if times have changed and racism has grown less acceptable, racism continues to be a problem in our society today, it ruins memories, days and lives. Many individuals throughout the world are victims of racism for no cause, and regrettably, not all victims will speak up and fight back. We should treat people how we want to be treated. Bill 21 not only affects people currently working in the public sector, but also the youth who aspire to those careers.
