- In other news, suspected drug dealer Khalil Harris was shot and killed by local police the other night. An unidentified witness has been questioned but no further details have risen.

- Hey Starr! Pretend the ball is fried chicken! Bet you'll stay on it then!
- Starr feels ashamed of dating Chris feeling like it is an "f you" to Khalil, Maverick, and her brother Seven. This fear of dating outside her race may be due to pure racism but fear of being rejected by her community. Starr spends the entirety of the novel stating that not all black people are bad. This should also apply to other races as well.
- Tying into racism, the local news branded Khalil as a local drug dealer. This angers Starr because Khalil was more than a drug pusher. This is an instance of the news outlets highlighting the negatives of Khalil to potentially deter bad press towards the cops and make the killing feel warranted.
- When Starr is playing basketball at her school, her "friend" Hailey makes a joke that Starr should imagine the ball is fried chicken so she'll play better. This instance of racism it the most obvious aspect of prejudice in Chapter 7. Hailey is in her comfort zone around other white people and feels like she can say these things to Starr.
