  • I am dispatching you and 100 dragoons to go retrieve a cannon in Gonzales that is rightfully ours!
  • Avoid any open conflict, but you may use force if necessary.
  • Yes sir!
  • We will have to wait for Andrew Ponton. These colonists won't let us through!
  • Come and take it!
  • That cannon belongs to Mexico! Give what is ours!
  • The number of Texas volunteers is at least 140 and more are expected.
  • Thank you for this information. I am going to move my army someplace that is not so well defended.
  • Domingo de Ugartechea found out that American colonists in Gonzales were refusing to give up a cannon that belonged to Mexico. He ordered Francisco de Castañeda to retrieve it.
  • Attack!

  • When Francisco de Castañeda reached the Guadalupe River he found American colonists blocking his path. He was informed that he would have to wait for Andrew Ponton to come. Castañeda them made camp and waited for him to come.
  • We are fighting to keep our cannon to uphold the Constitution of 1824.

  • I am a Federalist. I was ordered to bring the cannon, I didn't want to.
  • Why did you attack my men with no reason?
  • A Coushatta Indian entered the camp and told Castañeda that more Texans were coming. Castañeda knew that he couldn't cross the river so he chose a new place that wouldn't cause him any embarrassment. He ordered his camp to pitch seven miles up river. The Texans were also on the move.
  • Texas won the battle!
  • We have a chance to freedom!
  • On the morning of October 2 American colonists attacked Mexican troops. Castañeda ordered his men to fall back.
  • Cowards!
  • Castañeda arranged a parley with Texas commander John Henry Moore. They both discussed on some regulations, but they couldn’t agree on something. They returned to battle, and the Mexican dragoons were outnumbered and had no weapons. They quickly withdrew.
  • As a solider I have to follow orders, wether I agree with them or not.
  • The defeat of the Mexicans gave the Texans the moral they needed. They now had hope that they could win against Mexico and have freedom!
