  • After the king’s death, France entered a scary time called the Reign of Terror. The government led by Robespierre and the Committee of Public Safety, focused on killing anyone seen as an enemy of the revolution. From 1793 to 1794, over 17,000 people were executed, and much more died in prison. Even old revolutionaries weren’t safe as anyone seen as not loyal was at risk. The guillotine became a symbol of fear. In July 1794, Robespierre was arrested and executed, which ended the Reign of Terror.

  • After the Reign of Terror, France was really tired of chaos and fear, so in 1795, a new government called the Directory took control. It had five leaders who shared power and was supposed to be more peaceful than the violent governments before. The Directory tried to bring back order and fix the economy, but it had lots of problems. France was still at war, and people were divided. Some people thought the revolution went too far, and other people thought it had not gone far enough. The Directory was weak and corrupt, so people lost faith in it, too.

  • By 1799 after years of war and chaos, people really wanted a good leader. The Directory was weak, and Napoleon who was a popular general saw a chance to take over. In November 1799, he led a coup d'état, which was a quick takeover of the government. He became First Consul, and later made himself an emperor. Napoleon promised peace, order, and glory. He kept some revolutionary ideas like equality, but he ended democracy. His takeover ended the French Revolution because power went from the people to one person.
