- "No, for then we should be colliers"(Act 1 scene 1 line 2).
- "Gregory, o' my sword, we'll not carry the coals"(Act 1 scene 1 line 1).
- Gregory, Sampson, Abraham and BalthasarStreets if Verona
- "I do bite my thumb, sir"(Act 1 scene 1 line 42).
- "Do you bite your thumb at us, sir?"(Act 1 scene 1 line 41).
- The Montagues and Capulets have just started and the prince has come to stop them and has warned them of the consequences if it happens again (Hate)
- "Rebellious subjects, enemies to peace, Profaners of this neighbour-stained steel -- Will they not hear? What, ho!"(Act 1 scene 1 lines 76-78).
- In the beginning of Act 1 we are introduced to two characters named Gregory and Sampson who complain about being coal carriers.
- As two new characters, named Abraham and Balthasar, approach Gregory and Sampson, Sampson bites his thumb toward them which is like sticking up your middle finger.
- Though the two opposing houses start a fight, symbolizing violence and hatred, the prince stops them from doing so as he symbolizes peace and wants to keep the peace in his kingdom.
