- Development of the Hydrogen Bomb
- The United States' containment policy was one of the primary sources of tension during the cold war. The policy was both reflective of America's fear of communism and its enmity with Russia. The policy was also reflective of the red scare, which divided America greatly.
- The space race
- The arms race between the United States and Russia was arguably the most heated event of the Cold war. Whichever country had the most advanced weapons was the country nobody would attack. Supremacy in nuclear warfare was seen as a necessity for national security. The race was a deadly one, and the world seemed to always be on the verge of a nuclear holocaust.
- fall of the Berlin Wall
- The hydrogen bomb was the most destructive product of Russia and America's arms race. In theory, the hydrogen bomb can be about 1,000 times more powerful than an atomic bomb. The H-Bomb's very existence was and is a frightening prospect
- The collapse of the soviet union
- The space race was yet another competition between the United States and Russia. The stakes were simply bragging rights over the other country. Whichever Nation won the race got to add a little more evidence to its claim of superiority. Despite the race's somewhat nationalist motives, a lot of good came out of it in the form of scientific advancements.
- The Berlin wall was one of the strongest and ugliest symbols of the cold war, and it's destruction was a step in the right direction. The wall was erected by the German government to keep the population of Soviet controlled east Berlin from escaping to ally controlled west Berlin. The wall's destruction opened the door to freedom for East Berlin. When the Berlin wall was destroyed, the Soviet Union's grip on Berlin was shaken off.
- The soviet union was an oppressive communist state first led by Vladimir Lenin, the founder of the Russian communist party. The union's collapse essentially ended the cold war and ushered in an era of freedom in Eastern Europe. The Soviet union consisted of fifteen Republics. When the union fell, the republics declared their independence.
