The wall was erected by the German government to keep the population of Soviet controlled east Berlin from escaping to ally controlled west Berlin. The wall's destruction opened the door to freedom for East Berlin. When the Berlin wall was destroyed, the Soviet Union's grip on Berlin was shaken off.
