Devil’s Tower is a sacred site for Native Americans. The story behind the tower is that 2 Native Americans were being chased by a bear and then the Creator raised the rock they were standing on, creating the tower. It is said the shape of the tower is a result of the bear's claws digging in and climbing the rock, trying to get the Native American men. The site has been used by more than 20 tribes. These tribes have deep ties to the site and perform many ceremonies here, including worship, Sundance, and funerals.
Our Creator has given us this beautiful land and herbs.
We will use these wonderful herbs to help heal our sick.
Why are they treating our sacred site this way?
Don't they understand that we must take care of the land that has been provided to us by the Almighty?
The noise from the climbing will interrupt our ceremonial practices
We are tied to the land, our land is part of our religion. We perform our sacred ceremonies here. Most of our land has been taken from us. Can the climbers choose another spot so we can worship in peace?
This site is sacred and provided by the Creator, we must not treat it this way. This is our home and place of worship. Our culture and religion are tied to this land and site.
The climbing of the tower is damaging this sacred site and disrespectful to our Creator
This land is public property, they have a right to climb the tower.
I guess we have no rights.
Our First Amendment Rights matter too, however we will accept the compromise, as we know our Creator wants us all to live together and be peaceful.
The climbers also feel they have a spiritual connection with climbing and that is their First Amendment right. As a compromise, we are going to place a voluntary ban on climbing during the month of June. Besides, climbing the tower does not prevent your religious practice. There is nothing preventing you from your ceremonies nor hindering you from practicing your religion.
We praise you Almighty and we thank you. We will be peaceful.
We thank you Almighty and we will protect this earth as you have given it to us as a gift. We pray for forgiveness. We pray for our people.
