  • The central business district (CBD) is where the majority of businesses are located in a city. In the concentric zone model, it is located in the center of the city. Houses and apartments are much less common in the CBD and tend to be more prominent outside of it.
  • Suburb
  • yo John! do you want to come over for a barbeque this weekend?
  • Gentrification is the process where the character of a poor urban area is changed by wealthier people moving in, improving housing and bringing new businesses in. This isn't all good however; it typically drives out the poorer population who was living there before.
  • Edge City
  • I'm so glad our house isn't that far away from different shops
  • A belt of land maintained as parks, agriculture, or other open space to limit the sprawl of an urban area. They typically have bike or running trails. It can also be defined as a belt of parkways, parks, and farmland that encircles a community.
  • Tenement

  • Residential communities, located outside of city centers (like the CBD), that are usually relatively homogeneous in terms of population.

  • An edge city is an urban area with a large suburban residential and business area surrounding it. These areas are tied together by a beltway. The edge cities started as suburban areas for those who worked in the central cities.
  • A tenement is an apartment building in which several families rent apartments that barely reach minimum standards of safety, sanitation, and/or maintenance.
