Dont listen to her Scout just ignore her. Im going to be a gentlemen just like Atticus said
In this scene Mrs Dubose see's Jem and Scout walking and she tells Scout that she needs to start acting like a "lady" and start wearing dresses or she is going to end up waiting tables. Jem tries being a gentlemen like Atticus told him so he tells Scout to ignore her.
Scout you should be wearing a dress if someone doesn't correct you, you are going to end up cleaning tables!
Mrs. Dubose was talking bad about Atticus. So jem got angry and destroys her flowers even though Atticus told him to be a gentlemen he couldn't because when Mrs Dubose started saying those things about Atticus he got really angry and didnt care about being a gentlemen anymore.
It wouldn't surprise me. I mean look at your father. He is no better then the trash and niggers he chooses to defend.
Jem what are you doing!
Its fourteen minutes past five. The alarm clock is set to ring at five-thirty. I think Jem's reading days are numbered.
Jem had realized what he had done and he was scared and panicked so he told Scout to run and then he ran.Mrs Dubose told him to come back but he didnt listen so she said she would tell Atticus about what he did.
She use to be a morphine addict. She had been sick for a while now. But she made a promise to herself that she would die being free of her addiction and she did even through all that pain. See son I wanted you to see what real courage is,not a man with a gun.
Jem Finch you get back here right now! Don't think I wont tell your Father about this!
Run Scout!
Atticus found out about what Jem did and as his Punishment he has to read to Mrs. Dubose everyday for a month. Scout accompinied him while he went. But when Mrs. Dubose saw Scout she called her dirty and Jem defended Scout and said she wasn't dirty, but Mrs Dubose ignored the comment and told Jem to start reading.
I see you brought your dirty sister with you!
She's not dirty!
Once upon a time...
Atticus and Mrs. Dubose are talking about extending Jems punishment for a weak because Jem reading to Mrs. Dubose helps her forget about the pain. Atticus sees that but Jem doesn't notice the pain Mrs Dubose is in like Atticus does so when he hears this he thinks it unfair and gets mad. But Atticus knows that Mrs dubose is in a lot of pain so he agrees that Jem will read to her for a week longer, which is why she makes Jem stay for a little bit longer everyday.
yea just a weak longer... to be sure
Atticus what time is it?
Atticus went to go visit Mrs Dubose and when he comes back Jem asks him how it went. Atticus then tells Jem and Scout that she died. He then explains to him Mrs Dubose situation. He tells Jem that he wanted him to see what real courage was. That it wasn't a man with a gun. That' why Atticus considers her one of the most courageous person he knows. Jem learned that even though Mrs Dubose was mean and said all those horrible things about Atticus she still did have some good things about her. Atticus knew that she and he had different views of things and that she said mean things about him but he still admitted how brave and courageous she really was.
What? How?
What happened with Mrs. Dubose? What did she want?
