- Introducing the concept of time travel
- Meeting the Eloi
- Weena and the Sphinx
- The Time Traveler introduces the concept of time travel through his machine to his friends. None of his guests can fully perceive or grasp this information. One the Time Traveler returns a second time looked disheveled, he promises to reveal his tale if he is uninterrupted.
- Meeting the Morlocks
- The Time Traveller meets the mindless yet lovely creatures known as the Eloi. They show no real intelligence or ingenuity, and represent communism through similar clothing and mannerisms. They live in large, beautiful, communal homes. The Time Machine is represented by the UFO.
- Traveling
- The Time Traveler discovers the Machine is gone! While he is searching and exploring the area, he saves an Eloi, Weena, from drowning. They become companions. He later discovers that there are two species co-exising, aboveground and underground.
- Back Home in the Lab
- The Time Traveler learns the Morlocks live underground. As he is searching for his Time Machine, he starts a fire with camphor and some dry brush to protect himself and Weena. He eventually loses her, but the fire allows him to escape the Morlocks.
- The Time Traveler manages to escape from the Morlocks, and goes to a strange landscape. He continues traveling in time through different eras, witnessing Earth's decay.
- The Time Traveler eventually makes it back to his laboratory, and the story moves back to the Time Traveler's retellings. He knows that his story is hard to believe, and he himself wonders if it was all a dream. Everyone is skeptical except the narrator, who is so curious he goes back to question the Time Traveler later.
