- Unlike other people or migrant workers, George and Lennie are companions who work together. George desires to help Lennie as he is mentally disabled and can't survive on his own, especially later when seen discriminated against.
- People prey on the weak to feel better about themselves. They refuse to understand and help them, and instead, try to benefit using selfish methods. They seclude the less powerful with their lack of understanding and do their best to judge them.
- Carlson and Curley represent the realistic struggles of the world at the time. It is ignorant of misunderstanding the hardship many others face. They can't understand why George and Slim feel down, proving their selfishness and incomprehension of Lennie's adversities
