  • The Story of an Hour starts off with Mrs.Mallards sister Josephine and Richards at her house telling her about her husbands death . Her husband had been away out of town when his friend was in the newspaper office. His friend then seen that there was a railroad disaster with Brently Mallard's name on the list of "killed".
  • Louise, open the door! I beg; open the door- you will make yourself ill.
  • Go away. I am not making myself ill.
  • Mrs.Mallard went to a room alone, with an open window and a comfortable arm chair. Out of physical exhaustion she pressed down into the chair. Outside the window there were patches of blue sky through the clouds.
  • She had a feeling but she didn't know what it was. She felt it through the sounds, the scents, and the color that filled the sky. Mrs.Mallard tried to hold it back until "free, free, free!" slipped out of her mouth.
  • While Mrs. Mallard was in her room alone, her sister Josephine was on her knees begging for her to come out of her room because she thinks she is going to make herself ill. Mrs. Mallard just told her to go away and breathed a quick prayer that life might be long.
  • Mrs. Mallard came out of her room, they both went downstairs where Richards was waiting for them. Someone then opened the door and it was Brently Mallard, Mrs.Mallards husband. He had an umbrella and a grip sack. He had been far from the scene of the accident, and didn't even know there had been one. He stood there amazed at Josephine's cry.
  • Mrs.Mallard then died and when the doctors came they said she had died of heart disease. A joy that kills.
