The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street Theme

Storyboard Text

  • One major theme of The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street is that fear and suspicion are destructive, for example, from the text, there is a scene where the residents are approached by a mysterious figure coming towards them, and a person named Charlie shoots him, thinking it is a monster, the mysterious figure turned out to be his neighbor, Pete Van Horn, and Charlie just killed him. this scene supports the theme because Charlie was in FEAR of the monster coming towards him, in FEAR just like the other residents, as cited from the text, "One of the women lets out a stifled cry. The young mother grabs her boy, as do a couple of others," and Tommy, a kid, shouting, "It's the monster! It's the monster!" Charlie's fear and suspicion of both the monster, along with the panic of the other residents made him think irrationally and he shot the figure without a word, destroying his neighbor, Pete Van Horn. The scene after is where the residents accuse Charlie for being a monster after he shoots his neighbor, Charlie starts fighting with a man and he runs to his front porch and a rock thrown smashes a window into shards of glass that injures Charlie, with blood running down his cheek, This supports the theme because when the residents accuse him of being the monster, they all fail to realize that they too were scared of the of the monster, as said by Charlie in the text, "We're all scared of the same thing. I was just tryin' to... tryin' to protect my home, that's all!" However, the residents were to scared and suspicious of Charlie after he killed a neighbor that they didn't listen to him. leading up to destruction, Charlie being heavily injured after the crowd chases him. The final scene is where the whole town goes into chaos, this is the end of the story and it supports the theme because it shows the results of all of the other examples, people being suspicious and scared of each other broke up friendships, killed people, and injured people.
