July 23rd, a month after the assassination: Austria issued an ultimatum to Serbia; a statement of terms that if retaliated would end their relationship.
During the month that Austria spent preparing the ultimatum, they were also in talks with their ally, Germany, to make sure that if Russia were to help Serbia, Germany would have Austria's back. The Blank Check: A promise from Germany that they would help Austria if Russia did in fact attack.
Serbia rejected Austria's ultimatum. July 30th: Russia mobilized to fight, followed by France, who were in support of Russia, and Germany two days later.
